Label the classroom in Danish, starting with six words

If you are starting a beginners' Danish group, this is the sheet for week one. The six hidden words name objects already sitting on the desks: BORD for the table, LINEAL for the ruler, NOTESBOG for the notebook, VISKELÆDER for the eraser, plus COMPUTER and WHITEBOARD, which Danish has borrowed whole. Every word carries a picture, so the sheet explains itself to a child working alone.

Two of the six are free. A child reads COMPUTER and WHITEBOARD instantly and gets an early win, which matters more at this stage than difficulty does. The other four carry the learning: VISKELÆDER runs to ten letters and is the hardest find on the page, while NOTESBOG rewards anyone who spots that BOG means book. Working that out from a word list is real vocabulary building, disguised as searching.

Because the words name things in the room, the sheet has an obvious second half. Once the grid is finished, send your child round with sticky labels for the real bord, the real lineal, the real computer. Leave the labels up for a week and the Danish words they circled will be read a hundred more times, by everybody, without anyone practising on purpose.
