STOL means chair — and five more Danish words for the home

STOL is the word to watch. It looks like the English stool, but in Danish it means chair — and here it sits beside a picture of a chair to prove it. The other five hidden words are BOGREOL for the bookcase, PUF for the pouffe, PUDE for the cushion, BÆNK for the bench and TREMMESENG for the cot. Your child finds each one running across or down through the letters.

Danish builds furniture words the way it builds most things, by joining smaller ones together. BOGREOL holds bog, meaning book. TREMMESENG holds seng, a bed, and at ten letters it is the long haul of this grid — the word to save for last, once a child has warmed up on PUF and PUDE. Those two run to three and four letters, so they fall quickly.

Household vocabulary is the sort a family can carry off the page. Pin the finished sheet on the fridge and use one word a day: sit on the BÆNK, fetch a PUDE.
