A ball, a doll and a kite — in Danish

Most children already own the things this sheet names, which is why it is a sensible place to begin Danish. BOLD is the ball. DUKKE is the doll. DRAGE is the kite. CYKEL is the bicycle, BABY is the baby doll, and HELIKOPTER is the toy helicopter. Six words, each one attached to an object your child can point at in their own bedroom, hidden across and down in a single letter grid.

Because the meanings are already familiar, nothing has to be explained mid-puzzle and your child can give all their attention to the letters. They scan a line, catch the run of letters that makes DUKKE, and draw a ring around it. BABY and HELIKOPTER will be recognised at once, since Danish borrows both from the same source English does — a useful early lesson that a new language is not entirely unfamiliar territory.

Teachers find this one works well as a first Danish sheet for a whole class, because no child is left waiting for a translation. At home, try it the way parents often do: circle a word, then go and find the real toy. Holding the bicycle and saying CYKEL fixes the word far more firmly than reading it twice.
