From SKIB to GAFFELTRUCK — six Danish vehicles to find

SKIB is a ship. METRO is the underground. TRAKTOR, HELIKOPTER and BULLDOZER need almost no explaining to an English-speaking child, and GAFFELTRUCK is the forklift — literally a fork-truck, if you take the word apart. All six are hidden in one letter grid, each with a picture on the list, waiting to be read out of the rows and columns and ringed.

GAFFELTRUCK is where a child meets one of the real habits of Danish: two small words pushed together to make a longer one. Eleven letters looks daunting on the list and then turns out to be the simplest word to find, because a run that long cannot hide in a grid. SKIB is the opposite problem — four letters, easily missed — and it teaches a slower, more deliberate kind of looking.

Vehicle words earn their keep outside the sheet. Once the grid is finished, the game usually continues in the car or at the window: naming the TRAKTOR in a field, the SKIB in the harbour. Teachers use this one during a transport topic, where the Danish sits alongside the English without competing with it. Print it, play it on screen, or keep it in the bag for a long journey — there is no clock and no score.
