BJØRN is a bear; ISBJØRN is an ice-bear

Two of the six hidden words are worth a conversation before your child picks up a pencil. BJØRN is a bear; ISBJØRN is a polar bear, because is means ice. Danish tells you what the animal is by gluing words together, and once a child sees that, BÆLTEDYR — the armadillo, a belt-animal — makes a kind of sense too. GIRAF, ULV for wolf and FLAGERMUS for bat complete the list.

In the grid, BJØRN and ISBJØRN sit close enough in shape to demand real attention. Your child has to read the whole run of letters rather than stopping at the first familiar part, which is exactly the habit a beginning reader in any language needs. FLAGERMUS and BÆLTEDYR are long, so they surface quickly; ULV is three letters and will probably be the last one circled.

Print it before a zoo visit and the words have something to attach themselves to; ask afterwards which animal was the ISBJØRN and the answer usually comes back correctly.
