Getting dressed in Dutch, one circled word at a time

The pictures come first on this one: a dress, a shirt, a cap, a blouse, a pair of leggings and a pair of underpants. Each has its Dutch name printed underneath — JURK, OVERHEMD, PET, BLOUSE, LEGGING, ONDERBROEK — and each of those six words is hidden somewhere in the letter grid. Your child pairs the word to the picture, then goes looking for it among the letters, across and down.

BLOUSE and LEGGING will barely feel foreign, which is a gentle way in. PET is the one to watch: in Dutch it is a cap, nothing to do with an animal. ONDERBROEK rewards a closer look, since broek is trousers and onder is under, so underpants are literally under-trousers. Point that out once and your child has quietly gained broek as well, without ever being asked to learn it.

Clothes are useful early vocabulary precisely because they come up every single morning. Print this before a trip, or use it alongside a dressing-up box, then try naming one garment in Dutch each day at breakfast. A child who has hunted JURK through forty letters recognises it far faster on a label than one who has only heard it. No timing, no marking — just six words and a pencil.
