Eleven letters for a firefly

The hardest word here is VUURVLIEGJE, and it is worth warning a child before they start. Eleven letters, running off in a direction nobody expects, and it means firefly: vuur is fire, vlieg is fly, and the -je on the end is the tag Dutch adds to make something small. Once a child can see the three pieces, the eleven letters stop being frightening.

The other five are kinder. BALLON and HELIKOPTER sit close enough to English that they are usually circled within a minute. EEND is a duck and short enough to hide almost anywhere in the grid. ADELAAR, the eagle, and KEVER, the beetle, are the two a child will genuinely have to learn, which is why the pictures matter — they carry the meaning while the eyes do the finding.

Use it as a starter rather than a lesson in itself: ten minutes at the beginning of a session, with the words read aloud together at the end. Children who finish early can be asked which word is longest, or which two share letters. Nothing is timed and nothing is marked, so a child who finds only four of the six has still spent that time looking very hard at Dutch spelling, which is the part that lasts.
