Shopping words in Finnish, hidden six to a grid

Take this one shopping. The six words on the sheet are things a child can genuinely look for in a real aisle — KIIVI on a fruit label, SALAATTI by the vegetables, SHAMPOO on a bottle — and a word met on paper in the morning and again on a shelf in the afternoon tends to stay met. The grid is the first half of that; the trolley is the second.

Two of the six are gifts. KIIVI and SHAMPOO are near enough to English that a beginner reads them at sight, which is a fair way to start. HAMMASHARJA is the opposite: eleven letters, and nothing to hold on to unless you split it — hammas is a tooth, harja is a brush. VADELMA and KASSI sit somewhere in between, short enough to scan for but genuinely new.

The pictures alongside the grid mean an adult with no Finnish can still help: the raspberry is there next to its word, so you can both check a circle is in the right place. Words sit in straight lines, which keeps the scanning manageable for a child who is still learning to read left to right in a second language. No timer runs and nothing is scored, and an unfinished sheet can be folded up and finished later in the week.
