Ice cream, a beach and a campfire, spelled the Finnish way

The hardest word here is the shortest one. RAPU, a crab, runs to four letters, and in a full grid four letters can sit almost anywhere without being noticed at all. JÄÄTELÖ, ice cream, is the opposite case: three dotted vowels make it leap off the page. Between those two extremes sit RANTA the beach, NUOTIO a campfire, UIMAPUKU a swimming costume and SIMPUKKA a shell.

Those dots are worth explaining. Ä and Ö are separate letters in Finnish, not decorated versions of a and o, and JÄÄTELÖ carries three of them between them. A child who learns to hunt for dots has a quick way of narrowing down a crowded grid. UIMAPUKU splits neatly into uima, swimming, and puku, an outfit, and that pattern of two plain words locked together repeats right across the language.

Print it before a beach day and let a child circle a word for each thing that goes into the bag, or use it in the last week of term when everybody is already thinking about the holidays anyway. Reading the list aloud first is the single most useful thing an adult can do, since Finnish is spelled as it sounds. No timer, no score, and no pace that counts as the wrong one.
