The hardest word on this farm sheet is ÂNE, and it is three letters

Six farm animals are pictured — a cow, a sheep, a goat, a cat, a llama and a donkey — and the French word for each one is printed alongside and hidden in the grid. Your child reads a word, then works along the rows and down the columns until those same letters appear in order, and draws a ring round them. The pictures mean nothing has to be guessed at, and a child who has met only a handful of French words can still finish the page on their own.

Children expect the long words to be the trouble, and it is the other way about. MOUTON and CHÈVRE stretch across six letters and are spotted quickly. CHAT, at four, and ÂNE, at three, sit almost invisibly inside longer runs of letters and are usually the last two circled. If your child is stuck near the end, tell them how many letters are left to find.

Use it before a visit to a farm park, or alongside a picture book with animals in it, so the words are heard as well as read. Two small things to mention: the hat over the A in ÂNE, which changes nothing about the search but tends to be copied wrongly, and LAMA, which takes a single L where the English llama takes two.
