Owls, wasps and one winged horse — find their French names

Not everything on this sheet has feathers. The pictures show an owl, an eagle, a bee, a wasp, a dragonfly — and a pegasus, which flies only in stories. Their six French names are hidden in the grid, and your child reads along the rows until the letters line up, then rings whatever has been found. The picture list tells your child exactly which six to hunt for, so no guessing is involved.

HIBOU is the one to talk about. The H at the front is written down but never said, so the word begins on its second letter. French does this constantly, and meeting the habit inside a puzzle is gentler than meeting it in a lesson. LIBELLULE, nine letters with a double L buried in the middle, is the longest hunt here. GUÊPE is short but easily skimmed over, and often needs a second pass.

This suits a child who already likes minibeasts and birds and can name them happily in English. The French labels then attach to knowledge that is already sitting there, which is the easiest way for new words to land. Print it, hand over a pencil, and check the circles against the pictures once the grid is empty. There is no timer and no score anywhere on the page.
