The animal pictures on this sheet run from an armadillo to a kangaroo, and the French name of each one is buried somewhere in the letter grid. Your child matches picture to word first, then hunts. There are six words in all, each printed in capitals. OURS is only four letters and hides easily, because a child scanning for something longer walks straight past the bear. KANGOUROU, at nine letters, has the opposite problem: simple to spot, fiddly to trace without losing your place halfway. Between them the six words run from four letters to nine, which is a fair spread for a first French word search. PANDA is spelled the same in both languages, which makes it the kind one to begin with.

Good for a wet break, a car journey, or the ten minutes after a zoo visit while the animals are still fresh. An adult is useful for the sounds: ZÈBRE carries an accent your child has not met in English, and ANTILOPE leans on its last syllable rather than its first.
