German words from the hospital, long ones included

Hospital words are worth having before they are needed. Six are hidden here: KRÜCKEN for crutches, ROLLSTUHL for a wheelchair, SPRITZE for a syringe, TRAGE for a stretcher, TASCHENTUCH for a tissue, and CHART, which this sheet has left in English. The pictures sit beside the grid, so a child meeting all six for the first time still knows exactly what is being looked for.

The two long ones repay a second look. ROLLSTUHL is nine letters and comes apart into roll and stuhl — a rolling chair. TASCHENTUCH is eleven and comes apart into tasche, pocket, and tuch, cloth: a pocket cloth. Neither needs to be memorised as a block, and children who spot the join tend to find them fastest of all in the grid.

TRAGE is the short one and the easy miss, five letters swallowed among the rest. KRÜCKEN carries an umlaut, so a child scanning for a plain U will go straight past it. Use the sheet before a check-up, alongside a toy doctor's kit, or in a week where the topic is bodies and being poorly. It prints in colour and asks for nothing but a pencil. Hospital vocabulary is rarely gloomy for a young child; it is mostly equipment, and equipment is interesting to look at.
