The German word for aeroplane is two words stuck together

Beginner German · Vocabulary

The six words hidden here all name things that move: FLUGZEUG, SCHIFF, BUS, SKATEBOARD, TRAKTOR and KANU. Pictures of an airplane, a ship, a bus, a skateboard, a tractor and a canoe run alongside the grid, so your child never has to guess an answer — only find it. Every word reads straight across or straight down, and gets a circle once the last letter is reached.

FLUGZEUG rewards a moment of explanation. German builds long words by joining short ones, and this is FLUG, a flight, stuck to ZEUG, a thing: a flight-thing. SKATEBOARD and BUS have been borrowed straight from English and will feel like free points. SCHIFF ends in a doubled F, which is easy to miscount on a first pass. KANU is the sly one; four letters disappear easily among the others, and children often walk past it twice before it registers.

Use this when your child has met the words once already and needs them again without a drill. There is no timer, no score and no wrong turn — an unfound word is simply still out there. Adults help most by reading the picture list aloud in German first, so a child is hunting a sound as well as a shape. Print a copy each if two are working together.
