Your child hunts down the Norwegian for bucket, boat and jellyfish

Six Norwegian words sit inside the letter grid, each with a picture beside it so your child always knows what to look for. BØTTE is the bucket, BÅT the boat, MANET the jellyfish. The words run across and down. A child reads along a row, notices the letters lining up into a word they met a minute ago in the picture list, and draws a ring round it.

Two of the six are near-gifts: SANDALER and DELFIN are close enough to sandals and dolphin that most children spot them first. BADEDRAKT, the bathing suit, is the long one at nine letters, and it is really two words pushed together — BADE, to bathe, and DRAKT, a costume — which is worth pointing out, because Norwegian builds a great many of its everyday nouns this way. BÅT is only three letters and slips past the eye easily.

Print it for a rainy afternoon before a trip to Norway, or as the quiet half of a lesson where the rest has been spoken aloud. Say each word once together before your child starts; the sound helps the eye. The ring over the å in BÅT and the slash through the ø in BØTTE are letters English does not use, so a first-timer may need a moment to accept that they belong in the word at all.
