Road Safety Quiz: Which Sign Fits?

Grade 2 Road Safety PDF only Aligned standard — coming soon

Six sentence cards run down the left of this 2nd grade page, each with three road signs lined up beside it. The child reads the sentence and circles the one sign that fits. The sentences describe a situation rather than a sign: Drivers go slowly because kids are going to and from class. This is a spot where people cross the road on foot. There is a traffic light a little way down this road. Bicycles are not allowed here. Push yours on another path. Slow down and let the cars on the big road go first. This is the wrong way in, so drivers must turn around.

This is the reading face of the road safety family and the one that tests understanding rather than recognition. Each row sets the right sign beside two that look possible, often a sign with the same picture: the no bicycles rule sits next to the bicycle warning, the walking warning next to the no walking rule. A child who matches by the picture alone will get those rows wrong; one who reads the sentence and asks whether it is a rule or a warning will get them right. The right answer moves between the three positions from row to row.

One sheet, six sentences, six circles. The sentences are long for a second grader, so pair readers or read them aloud if the sign knowledge is what you want to check. Use it after the sorting face, which sets up the rule-or-warning idea it depends on. As a follow-up, ask children to write one sentence of their own for a sign on the page and swap with a partner.
