Spelling Rules Worksheet
Which One? Choose Between Two Spellings of the Same Sound
A choice between two chips is what this 2nd grade which-one page asks for eight times over. The sheet shown is c or k: the rule box at the top holds only the two letters, and eight cards in two columns of four each show a small picture beside a word in spaced letters with one dashed gap — _ ey for key, _ angaroo, _ omb, _ anoe, _ ardigan, _ iwi, _ alf, and lee _ with the gap at the end. Under every word sit two chips printed c and k. The child reads the word, circles the chip that fills the gap correctly, and copies the letter into the dashed box. Four words on the sheet take c and four take k.
Offering the two candidates turns the rule into a decision the child can reason about: k before e and i, c before a, o and u, with kangaroo and canoe side by side to make the pattern visible. That is a different skill from the base page, where nothing is offered and the rule letters come from memory, and it is the right first step for a spelling that has two legitimate forms. The English set runs this face over the pair rules — c or k, ee or ea, ai or ay — one pair per sheet.
It prints on one page and most children finish it quickly, since each card is one circle and one letter. Use it before the sort-by-rule page, which uses the same pair but asks for the whole word to be written into a bin. Words run up to ten letters and none are labeled with their answer.
