Verb Forms in Sentences with Pictures: Write the Form That Fits

Grade 2 Language PDF only Common Core

No table, six sentences. This 2nd grade verb-forms page prints six picture sentence cards, one under another, each with a dashed gap and the base verb in an outlined chip at the end of the line: Lily ______ in the garden today (read). Today Ben ______ with his sister (run). On Mondays Anna ______ at the club (sing). Every day Mia ______ in the park (wander). Tom ______ at the pool yesterday (jump). After school Leo ______ at home (dance). A picture of a child reading, running, singing, walking with a backpack, jumping rope or dancing sits at the left of each card. The child reads the whole sentence, finds the time word, and writes the form that fits: reads, runs, sings, wanders, jumped, dances.

Choosing a form from a sentence is the skill the verb table was practicing for. The chip gives the child the verb so that nothing has to be recalled; the sentence gives the time — today, on Mondays, every day, yesterday, after school — and the child has to notice it and act on it. Five of the six sentences are present, which means the -s ending gets most of the work, and the one yesterday sentence checks that the child is actually reading the time word and not writing -s everywhere. The teacher covers the chip and asks the child to say the sentence with the form in it; if it sounds wrong aloud, it is wrong.

It prints on one sheet with wide dashed boxes. The base today-and-yesterday page combines a table with three sentences of this kind, so this face is the extension for a child who has the table down and needs more sentences. The choose-the-right-form page offers the same kind of sentences with three printed forms to circle, for a child not yet ready to write the ending unaided.
