Six animals, six Danish names, one letter grid

The pictures come first here. A child looks at the dog, the horse and the penguin, reads the Danish name printed with each, then goes looking for those letters in the grid. HUND and HEST are short and go quickly. PANDA and KAMEL sit close enough to English to be almost free. PINGVIN takes a moment longer, and SPÆTTE — woodpecker — brings in a letter English simply does not have.

That letter deserves a pause. Æ turns up in SPÆTTE and in a great many other Danish words, and a child who has spent a few minutes hunting for it in a grid will recognise it later without being taught. This is the thing a picture word search does well: it makes the shape of a written word familiar long before anyone asks a child to read it aloud or spell it.

Animal words are the easiest possible starting point for any language, because a four-year-old already knows every animal on the page. Print it for a child beginning Danish, or for a bilingual family where the written language is lagging behind the spoken one. Six words makes a sensible sitting: about ten minutes with a pencil, and the names last considerably longer than that.
