A hedgehog is a PINDSVIN: six Danish forest words to find

Your child already knows what a hedgehog is. What they will not know is that a Danish child calls it a PINDSVIN — a stick-pig. That kind of surprise is what makes these words stick. The six hidden here are SKILDPADDE for the turtle, SNEGL for the snail, ØRN for the eagle, MUS for the mouse, PINDSVIN for the hedgehog and SOMMERFUGL for the butterfly, each shown as a picture beside the grid.

SOMMERFUGL is worth pausing over too — summer-bird, near enough — and at ten letters it is the longest run on the sheet. MUS and ØRN are the quick wins at three letters each. ØRN carries the Danish Ø, which your child may be meeting for the first time; it is easy to skate past when scanning fast, so it is worth a finger-point before the search begins.

Read the six aloud once, then let your child work alone. Danish speech softens its consonants, so SNEGL loses most of its g and SKILDPADDE sounds shorter than it looks. A parent who speaks no Danish can still run this: the pictures carry the meaning and the grid carries the reading. Free to print, or work through it on screen if the printer has given up.
