Sink or Float Worksheet
Draw What Floats and Sinks: A Sink or Float Drawing
A single big tank of water fills this kindergarten page. Two labels on the left say floats and sinks, with a small picture of each, and four dashed boxes wait inside the tank: two sit across the wavy surface and two rest on the sandy bottom. The child draws two things that float in the boxes on the water and two things that sink in the boxes at the bottom. There are no pictures to copy and no words to read beyond the labels.
Kindergartners learn sink and float by playing in water long before they can write about it, and drawing is how they show what they noticed. Because the child chooses the objects, the page reveals what they believe: a rubber duck and a leaf on top, a stone and a key at the bottom are the classic answers, and a heavy drawing in the float box is worth a question. Four boxes keep it short enough for a five-year-old to finish.
One sheet, four drawings. It works best straight after water play, with the real objects still dripping on a towel, so children draw what they saw rather than guess. Ask each child to tell you what they drew and write the words under their pictures. For older children the base page of the sink or float family adds a guess and a test for six named objects.
