A or An Worksheet
A or An? Circle the Right Word for Each Animal
This Kindergarten a or an worksheet shows six large animal cards, two across and three down. Each card holds one big picture — an owl, an elephant, an iguana, a horse, a cat, a pig — and beneath it two white chips reading a and an. The child says the animal name out loud, listens to the sound it starts with, and circles the chip that belongs in front of it. There is nothing to write, and the answer is decided entirely by the ear: an owl, an elephant, a horse, a pig.
The rule for a and an is a sound rule, not a spelling rule, which is why the page insists on saying the word before choosing. Children who are read to every day already say an owl correctly in speech; the page makes that unconscious habit visible so it can be written later. Animals are a good place to practice because the vowel-sound names are common and distinct — owl, elephant, iguana, antelope, octopus — while horse, cat, pig, and wolf give the a side plenty of turns. The teacher listens for the child stretching the first sound, ohh-wl, before deciding; a child who circles without saying the word is guessing from the picture.
Print the PDF free and keep it as a quick oral warm-up rather than silent seat work, since the saying is the point. The easier version uses four cards, and the harder version spreads eight smaller cards across the page with at least three an answers mixed in. Once the child places a and an confidently in speech, the unscramble the sentence page puts those small words back into whole sentences, and the singular and plural page looks at the other end of the noun.
