Write the Word Worksheet
Write the Word: Spell Each Fruit from Its Picture
This 1st grade write the word worksheet shows eight fruits on eight cards — an orange, an apple, a blackberry, a banana, a clementine, a mango, a persimmon, a raspberry — and gives each one a clean handwriting line and, underneath, a row of small dashed boxes, one box for every letter of the word. There is no word bank on this version of the page. The child says the fruit's name, listens to the sounds in order, writes a letter in each box, and then copies the finished word onto the line. The boxes tell the child how many letters to expect; they say nothing about which ones.
Spelling from a picture is the reverse of reading: the sounds come first and the letters have to be found for them. The letter-count boxes are what make the page workable at this age. A child who writes appl for apple sees an empty box and goes back to listen for the last sound, and a child who writes bananna runs out of boxes and has to reconsider. That is self-correction without a teacher standing over the page. What the teacher looks at afterward is which sounds went missing or were swapped; the vowels are usually the story, and eight words are enough to show a pattern.
Print the PDF free and let the child stretch each word aloud, sound by sound, before touching the pencil. The easier version has six cards with a word bank across the top and the first letter already printed; the harder version keeps eight cards but removes the boxes as well, leaving a plain line and the child's own spelling. This page assumes the child can already copy a word from a model, which is what the trace and write words page practices, and it leads straight into the abc order page, where picture words get sorted rather than spelled.
