Word Problems Worksheet

Addition Word Problems with Pictures

Grade 1 Operations & Algebraic Thinking Common Core

Every story on this Grade 1 page adds. Someone picks a few apples and then picks a few more; someone brings pears to the table and a friend brings some too. Under each story sits a strip of fruit pictures showing exactly what the words describe, and beside it a dot-grid panel for working. The child reads, counts the fruit if they need to, jots or draws on the grid, and writes the total in the answer box.

Keeping every story on this page an addition story is a deliberate simplification. A word problem asks a child to do two hard things at once — decide what is happening, then compute — and beginners often fail at the first while being perfectly capable of the second. With the operation fixed, all the attention goes to modelling the story: who had what, what arrived, what the question actually wants. Addition also turns up in more than one shape here, joining and putting together, which is worth naming aloud while the pictures are still in front of them.

The page prints free as a PDF, and it reads aloud beautifully for children still building fluency. Subtraction stories are the obvious companion sheet, the mixed picture word problems put the two operations back together, and mental math within 20 keeps the totals quick.
