Word Problems Within 10: Small Numbers, Real Stories

Grade 1 Operations & Algebraic Thinking Common Core

Every number on this Grade 1 page stays inside ten. The stories still add and subtract, still come with a strip of fruit pictures and a dot-grid panel to work on, but nothing ever climbs past a total the child can hold on two hands. Read the story, count the pictures, work it out on the grid, write the answer in the box — with the arithmetic small enough that nobody gets lost halfway through a sentence.

Small numbers here are a reading decision rather than a mathematical one. A first grader working through an unfamiliar sentence is already spending most of their attention on the words; if the calculation waiting at the end is also demanding, the whole thing collapses and the child quietly concludes they are bad at word problems. Keeping every total within ten frees that attention for comprehension, which is the part actually being taught. That makes this a good page for children new to the language of the classroom, and a good first page of the year for everyone else.

It prints free as a PDF and works well read aloud in pairs, one child reading while the other solves. When the reading feels easy, addition stories and subtraction stories raise the numbers, and the compact three-story page is the next step up in stamina.
