Word Problems Worksheet
Animal Word Problems with Pictures
This Grade 1 word problems page runs on animals. Two short stories — ducks arriving at a pond, rabbits disappearing into the grass, a farmer counting sheep — sit above a strip of animal pictures showing exactly what the words describe, plus a dot-grid panel for working out. The child reads, counts the animals if that helps, and writes the answer in the box. The mathematics matches the fruit edition exactly; only the cast has changed.
Changing the pictures is not decoration. Children who meet the same story structure only ever with apples can quietly conclude that the method belongs to apples, and then stumble the first time a problem is about ducks. Re-running identical structures across different nouns is how a strategy becomes portable — and animals happen to carry more story with them, which loosens up the retelling that is such a good check on understanding. The vocabulary is a bonus for children still building the everyday nouns of their school language.
The sheet prints free as a PDF, and animals invite a good follow-up: make up one more story about the same picture. The fruit edition of these picture word problems is the sibling to run alongside it, and word problems within 10 keeps the numbers small while the reading grows.
