Subtraction Word Problems with Pictures

Grade 1 Operations & Algebraic Thinking Common Core

Both stories on this Grade 1 page take something away. A basket of oranges loses a few to a hungry family; a plate of strawberries is shared out and some get eaten. A picture strip underneath restates the situation in fruit icons the child can count and cross off, and a dot-grid panel gives room to work. They read the story, lean on the pictures as much as they like, and write what is left in the answer box.

Subtraction stories are quietly harder than they look, because taking away is only one of their shapes. The same minus sign covers what is left over, how many more one person has than another, and how many are missing — and children who learn the shortcut of grabbing the two numbers and subtracting the smaller from the larger get away with it for a while, then abruptly stop getting away with it. Picture support is the antidote: it is difficult to misread a story you can physically count and cross out.

Print the PDF free and ask the child to point at what disappeared before they write anything down. Addition stories make the natural pairing, fact family houses show why the two operations are really one relationship, and word problems within 10 is the gentler edition when the reading still feels heavy.
