ABC Order: Put Six Animal Words in Alphabetical Order

This 1st grade abc order worksheet starts with a full alphabet strip across the top, a to z in tinted cells the child can run a finger along. Below it, six animal cards are scattered at slight angles — zebra, reindeer, pig, cat, iguana, wolf — each with its word printed under the picture and a small dashed circle in the corner. The child finds the first letter of every word on the strip, writes 1 in the circle of the word that comes first, 2 in the next, and so on to 6, then copies the six animals in that order onto six numbered lines at the bottom of the page.

Alphabetizing asks the child to treat letters as a fixed sequence rather than as sounds, which is a new use for the alphabet they already know by song. The strip is there so nobody has to recite from a to find out whether p comes before r; they can look, and looking is the skill that later finds a word in a dictionary or a name in a class list. Numbering the circles before writing separates the thinking from the handwriting, so a child who changes their mind can cross out a number cheaply. The teacher checks the circles first: if the numbers are right and the lines are wrong, the problem is copying, not ordering.

Print the PDF free and, the first time through, have the child touch each word's first letter on the strip and say its position aloud. The easier version uses four cards whose first letters are spaced well apart in the alphabet and asks only for the numbered circles; the harder version keeps six cards but makes two pairs share a first letter, so the child has to look at the second letter to break the tie.
