Sentence Scramble Worksheet
Unscramble the Sentence: Put the Word Tiles in Order
This 1st grade unscramble the sentence worksheet has four rows, each with a small picture of one of the animals on the left and a line of white word tiles that look like cards dropped on a desk — red, Lily, the, pig, likes. The tiles are out of order. The child reads them, works out the one order that makes a sentence, and writes it on the three-line handwriting rule underneath, remembering the capital at the start and the end mark at the finish, because on this version the period or question mark has been stripped from the tiles. Four animals, four scrambled sentences, four lines to write.
Rearranging tiles is grammar the child can handle physically. The words are all given, so the task is not spelling or vocabulary but sentence sense: which word starts, where the verb goes, what the little words attach to. The capitalized tile is a clue that the child learns to hunt for, and a tile like Where announces that the sentence will need a question mark. This is a different job from the fix the sentence page, where the words are already in order and only the mechanics are missing; here the order itself is the puzzle, and the mechanics come last. The teacher listens for the child reading the tiles aloud in trial orders — that murmur is the sentence being tested by ear.
Print the PDF free and let the child number the tiles lightly in pencil before writing, or cut them out for a first pass. The easier version has three rows of three or four tiles with the end mark still attached to the last word, so only the order is missing; the harder version prints every tile in lowercase except names, so the child must also decide which word takes the capital. Fix the sentence is the next page when the order is secure, and the read and color page keeps short sentences like these in reading rather than writing.
