Reading a Calendar: Answer Six Questions About the Month

This 2nd grade reading a calendar worksheet prints one real month — March 2027, say — as a full grid with the weekday names across the top, every date in its cell, and three small toy stickers sitting on three different days. Under the calendar are six questions in cream boxes with dashed answer spaces: What day of the week is the 15th? How many Mondays are in this month? On which date is the sticker? What is the date one week after the 21st? How many days does this month have? What day of the week is the first day? Every answer is on the calendar; the child only has to read it off.

Reading a calendar is reading a table, and a table is read in two directions: down a column to count Mondays, across a row to see that seven days later means the cell directly below. Children who can recite the days of the week often cannot yet use a calendar page, because the grid hides the order in a wrap-around layout, and this page gives them the practice in the form they will meet on every classroom wall. The stickers make dates something to find rather than just numbers. The teacher watches the one-week-later question: a child who counts seven cells forward is working, while a child who drops straight down has understood the grid.

Print the PDF free and put a real calendar beside it so the child can check that the same tricks work on this month too. The easier version asks four questions with two stickers; the harder version uses a six-row month, asks how many days lie between two stickers, and asks for the last day of the month.
