Trace and Write Words: Animal Names on Handwriting Lines

This Kindergarten trace and write words worksheet puts four animals down the left edge of the page — a vulture, an owl, a wolf, a horse — and beside each one a block of three handwriting lines. The top line shows the animal name in solid teal print, the middle line repeats it in dashed letters for tracing, and the bottom line is empty. The child says the picture word aloud, traces the dashed copy, then writes the whole word from the model on the empty line. Four animals, four words, twelve lines.

The page keeps the word whole. A child who has been forming single letters now has to string them together in the right order and at the right size, with real spacing between them, on real lines. Having the solid model directly above the dashed copy means the eye can check against a correct version at every stroke, and the dashed letters carry the shape while the hand learns it. What a teacher watches for here is not speed but whether the traced word and the written word look like each other — same letter heights, same left-to-right flow, no dropped letters. Saying the word first ties the letter string to a name the child already knows.

Print the PDF free and hand it out with a sharpened pencil rather than a marker, so the dashed lines stay visible under the child's strokes. The easier version uses three short animal names of three to five letters, owl and wolf rather than vulture, on taller lines; the harder version drops the solid model and asks for two independent writes after one trace. Once the child copies animal words comfortably, the write the word page removes the model altogether and asks for spelling from the picture alone, and the singular and plural page adds an ending to words the child can already write.
