Copy the Grid Picture: Color the Same Squares on the Empty Grid

This Kindergarten copy the grid picture worksheet shows two pixel pictures, one above the other. Each is a seven-by-seven grid on the left with some squares filled solid teal so that a simple figure appears — a duck, a boat, a flower — and an identical empty grid on the right. The child studies the filled grid, finds the matching square on the blank one by counting across and down, and colors it, square by square, until the picture has been copied exactly. There is no key and no hint: the picture on the left is the whole instruction.

Copying a grid picture trains the child to hold a position in two directions at once. To place a single square correctly the child has to count how far across it sits and how far down, then reproduce both counts on the other grid, and a mistake of one square in either direction is visible the moment the picture bends. That is the same row-and-column thinking that later underpins reading a table, a map, or a hundreds chart. Because both grids are the same size and sit side by side, the teacher can see at a glance whether the child is transferring squares one at a time or trying to draw the shape from memory, which is where errors creep in.

Print the PDF free and offer one colored pencil; a single color keeps the focus on position rather than on decorating. The easier version uses a six-by-six grid with fewer filled squares, and the harder version moves to eight-by-eight with letters along the top and numbers down the side of both grids, so the child can name each square before coloring it.
