Number of the Day Worksheet

Number of the Day: Show One Number Eight Ways

Grade 1 Number & Operations in Base Ten Common Core

This 1st grade number-of-the-day worksheet prints one number, such as 46, huge inside a white card at the top left, and then fills the page with boxes that each ask for it in a different form. The child writes the number word on a handwriting line, fills in the numbers before and after it, splits it into tens and ones, draws it with base-ten blocks on a dot grid, works out ten more and ten less, marks it on a number line from 0 to 50, and finally counts on three steps and counts back three steps in two rows of arrow boxes. Eight boxes, one number, every box done.

A number the child can only say is a number the child only half owns. Writing 46 as forty-six, as 4 tens and 6 ones, as blocks, as a spot on a line, and as 56 and 36 builds the place-value picture that later addition and subtraction depend on. The routine shape matters too: because the boxes are the same every day and only the number changes, the child spends attention on the mathematics instead of on the instructions. The teacher watches the tens-and-ones box and the ten-more box together; a child who writes 4 tens but then adds ten by counting on ten ones has not yet connected the two.

Print the PDF free and use it as a daily opener — the same page, a fresh number, five minutes. The easier level uses teen numbers from 11 to 19 on a 0 to 20 line and shows the number in ten-frames and tally marks; the middle level uses numbers from 21 to 49; the harder level runs to 99 with a 0 to 100 line and asks the child to count on by tens. The number line page then isolates the find-it-on-the-line skill, and the doubles and halves page and the number walls page put those same numbers into addition facts.
