ABC Order Worksheet

ABC Order: Number the Cards, Then Write Them on the Lines

Grade 1 Language Aligned standard — coming soon

The cards get numbered first and copied second on this 1st grade abc order page. An alphabet strip runs across the top, four vehicle cards sit below it - skateboard, jet, canoe, yacht - each with its word printed and a dashed circle in the corner, and four numbered handwriting lines wait at the foot of the page. The child numbers the circles 1 to 4 using the strip, then writes the four words onto the lines in that order.

Splitting the page into two steps is what makes it teachable. Ordering happens in the circles, where a wrong answer costs nothing, and only then does the handwriting start. That separation also tells a teacher exactly what went wrong: circles right and lines wrong is a copying slip, circles wrong is an ordering one, and the two need completely different help. The first letters here - c, j, s, y - sit far enough apart in the alphabet that the strip settles every question.

Print the PDF free and check the four circles before the child begins to write, so a wrong order is not copied out neatly. The number the words version stops at the circles if writing four words is too much for now, and the same first letter version keeps the lines but makes two pairs share a first letter so the second letter decides. The write the word page is where these vehicle words get spelled rather than copied.
