Number Walls: Build Every Row of a Four-Course Wall

Four courses instead of three. Each of the four number walls on this 1st grade page starts with four printed numbers along the bottom - 2, 1, 3, 1 on the first - and rises through three empty bricks, then two, then one, ten bricks in all with six of them to fill. No gaps anywhere in the base, so every wall can be built straight upward: add each neighbouring pair, write the answer above, and repeat on the row you have just made.

The extra course is not just two more sums; it changes what an error costs. A mistake in the second row now feeds two bricks above it rather than one, so the wrong number spreads as it climbs and the top brick is wrong for a reason three rows down. Children discover from this that checking as you go beats checking at the end. Working with a number you wrote yourself, rather than one printed for you, is also the harder half of the task.

Print the PDF free and suggest the child finishes an entire row across all four walls before starting the next; it makes the pattern of the structure obvious. Sums here stay within twenty.
