Doubles and Halves Worksheet

Doubles and Halves to 20: Numbers Only, Eight Cards

Grade 1 Operations & Algebraic Thinking Common Core

The pictures are gone. Where the animals, fruits and vehicles versions of this doubles and halves worksheet give the child a group to count, this 1st grade page gives numbers and an empty dotted work box above each one. Eight cards run down the page in two columns: four marked double - 8 + 8, 5 + 5, 10 + 10, 6 + 6 - and four marked half, where 16, 14, 12 and 10 each have to be split into two equal parts written in a pair of boxes.

Doubles are the addition facts children remember first and lean on hardest, because near doubles like 6 + 7 are built from them, and every half on this page is one of those same facts read backward. Setting them side by side makes the pair explicit: double 8 is 16 and half of 16 is 8 and 8. The dotted box above each fact is deliberately blank - a child who still needs to draw sixteen dots may, and stopping doing so is the visible sign the fact has been learned.

Print the PDF free and watch the work boxes rather than the answers; the page has done its job on the day they stay empty. All doubles here run from five to ten and all halves are even numbers to twenty. The first steps version returns to countable groups of animals if the numbers alone are too abstract. Number walls use these sums inside a structure, and the number of the day page reaches the same totals from a single number.
