Where on the Number Line? 0 to 30, Labelled Every Five

The line stretches to 30 on this 1st grade number lines page. Four lines fill the sheet, each labelled at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 with a tick at every number in between, and three orange arrows per line point at ticks with no number of their own. An empty dashed box waits above each arrow. The child picks the nearest printed five, counts on or back to the arrow, and writes what it points to - twelve answers in all.

Widening the range past twenty is the point of this version rather than any change of method. The twenties are where the number names finally behave - twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three, all built the same way - and locating them on a line is how a child confirms that the pattern holds. Keeping a label every five means the counting stays short even at the far end, so the difficulty is in reading and naming the larger numbers, not in tracking a long run of ticks.

Print the PDF free and have the child read each answer aloud as it is written; hearing twenty-eight while pointing at it does more than the box alone. The fewer labels version is harder in a different way, with only three landmarks across a shorter line, and the 0 to 10 version is the place to begin.
