About this activity

Two two-digit numbers appear — like 47 and 52, or 63 and 38 — and the child taps the statement that is true, using greater than (>), less than (<), and equal to (=). Some pairs are equal, such as 45 and 45 or 88 and 88, so the equal sign matters too. It's a free Grade 1 place-value activity that runs right in the browser with no sign-up.

The strategy is to look at the tens first, then the ones. With 47 and 52, the 5 tens beat the 4 tens, so 47 is less than 52 — even though 7 is bigger than 2. Tricky pairs like 29 and 92 use the same digits in different places, so the child must read place value rather than the digits themselves.
