Picture Word Wall

The Picture Word Wall turns a shelf of vocabulary flashcards into something a wall of butcher paper never could be: a browsable, speaking wall of 1,495 illustrated nouns across 50 themes — animals, the kitchen, the beach, occupations, weather. Tap any card and it lifts out of the wall, grows large, and says its word out loud in a clear voice a child can replay as many times as she likes. The pictures are the same warm illustrations used across the whole platform, so a word learned here is recognised everywhere else.

The part no other word wall can do is the toggle. Every card holds both its singular and its plural, hand-checked rather than guessed, so one duck becomes three ducks and the word changes with the picture — and where the word does NOT change, the card says so out loud instead of pretending. In the languages that have grammatical gender, every card is colour-coded by its article and the article is always spoken with the noun, never apart from it, because that is how the word actually lives in a sentence.

Whisper mode is the quiet favourite: a word is spoken, the child finds its card, and a firefly drifts across the wall and lands on it. There is no timer, no score, and no wrong-answer sound — a miss just brings the firefly closer and says the word again, a little slower, so every round ends in success. Teachers can pin cards from any theme into their own named wall for the week and run a sixty-second read-through with the class each morning.

How to use it in class

• Open a theme and project the wall — the cards are big enough to read from the back row.
• Tap any card: it grows large and says its word out loud, with its article.
• Use the one/many toggle to multiply the picture and hear the plural change with it.
• Turn on Whisper mode and let children take turns finding the word they hear — the firefly lands when they do.
• Long-press cards from any themes to pin your own wall, name it for the week, and read it together every morning.

Classroom ideas

• Morning read-through: pin this week's eight words, name the wall, and chorally read it in sixty seconds each day.
• Newcomer corner: a child with no shared language taps pictures and hears the word whole, article attached, as often as she likes — no writing, no speaking, no waiting.
• Article sort: in a gender language, ask children to find every card of one colour on the wall before you say the word.
• One and many: build a plural lesson entirely from the toggle — the picture proves the rule before the rule is named.
• Theme preview: open the theme of your next unit and let the class name what they already know before you teach a single word.
