Count the Stars Awake — Counting On from a Number (Kindergarten)

Kindergarten·K.CC.A.2

A free interactive Kindergarten counting game: a little firefly is stuck — she can only fly where you have already counted. Start at the one lit star and count her FORWARD, one dark star at a time (eight… nine… ten…), waking each star as you go. When the last star lights, the sleeping constellation wakes up. Counting forward from a given number — not always starting at one — is the heart of Common Core K.CC.A.2.

About this activity

A stuck firefly can only fly to stars the child has already counted, so starting from one lit star — not always at one — the child taps Count on to light each next numeral (eight… nine… ten…) and Wake it to settle her down, until a hidden constellation animal appears. It's a free, interactive Kindergarten counting game that runs in the browser with no account.

The big idea is counting on from a given number instead of restarting at one every time — a real leap for young counters. Because the starting star can be 6, 7, 11, or 12, the child has to know what comes next from there, not recite the whole sequence from the beginning. Saying each number as it lights links the spoken count to the written numeral and to the one-by-one motion of counting.

It is aligned to Common Core K.CC.A.2 — counting forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence. No timer, no score — just calm, playful practice.
