About this tool

Money Mat is coin counting with the coins your children actually see. A warm market stall shows an illustrated item with a price tag; children tap coins from the purse onto the mat, and the running total counts up with soft clinks — a speaker chip says the total out loud whenever you want it. The coins are the real thing pedagogically: true relative sizes, real metal color families, and your locale's real denominations — euros and cents, Swedish kronor, Danish and Norwegian kroner, Brazilian reais, or dollars with a pounds toggle — with prices formatted the way your country writes them.

Paying exactly earns a warm thank-you and a gentle, dismissible invitation: can you make the same amount another way? A second, genuinely different combination is celebrated by showing both ways side by side with an equals sign — equivalence made visible, never graded. Every coin on the mat can be tapped back into the purse, and a not-yet-right total is simply silent: there are no buzzers, no red marks, and the stall keeper's smile never changes.

The small-price stall with every coin and the make-it-another-way invitation is free forever. Premium adds banknotes, bigger price bands, saved stalls for your center rotations, and the change-making mode: pick something to pay with — every choice offered is valid — and the stall keeper counts your change back coin by coin, out loud, the classic counting-on strategy made audible.

How to use it in class

• Project the stall and read the price tag together — small prices stay under one euro, dollar, pound, or ten kronor.
• Let a child tap coins from the purse onto the mat; watch the running total climb, and tap any mat coin to put it back.
• Tap the speaker chip to hear the total spoken in real money words whenever the class wants a check.
• After an exact payment, take the invitation: clear the mat and build the same amount a different way, then compare both ways side by side.
• In Premium, switch to Get change: choose what to pay with and tap each coin the keeper offers while the counting-on is spoken aloud.

Classroom ideas

• Coin hunt warm-up: show a price, and pairs race gently to find ONE way to pay it — then the class collects all the different ways on the board.
• Fewest-coins talk: after two ways are on screen, ask which way uses fewer coins and why — the equivalence discussion runs itself.
• Currency corner: with the pounds toggle (or a neighbour country's stall on another tablet), compare what the same small price looks like in two currencies.
• Change-back echo: in change mode, the class repeats each counting-on step aloud after the keeper — counting on becomes a chant.
• Saved-stall centers: save a stall per group with prices tuned to each group's band, and rotate groups through the same market.
