Trace Once, Write It Twice: Vehicle Words on Handwriting Lines

The model word on this Kindergarten page has moved. Four vehicles sit in cream cards down the left - an airplane, an excavator, a tractor, a canoe - and each word is printed in solid teal under its own picture, not on the writing lines. To the right, the top line carries the word in dashed letters for one trace, and below it wait two empty lines. Trace once, then write the word twice with no letters underneath to follow.

Removing the model from the line block is a small change that asks for a lot. The first write still has the traced word directly above it; the second has only the child's own attempt and a label a card-width away. That is where a teacher finds out whether the shape of the word has been learned or merely copied. Compare the two writes on each row: the same letter heights and the same spacing twice over means the word has been remembered.

Print the PDF free and let the child finish one whole row before moving down, so the memory of the trace is fresh at both writes. Four rows is a longer stint than the three-row fruit version, and the words here run from five letters to nine. If two independent writes are too much, the first words page keeps a solid model on the line above every blank; if the child is ready for more, the write the word page removes the tracing altogether.
