Trace Your First Words: Three Short Fruit Names

Three fruits run down the left edge of this Kindergarten word tracing page - a pear, a fig, an apple - and no word on it is longer than five letters. Beside each picture sits a block of handwriting lines: the name printed once in solid teal on the top line, the same word repeated in dashed letters underneath, and a third line left completely empty. The child says the fruit aloud, traces the dashed copy, then writes the word alone on the blank line.

Short words are the whole point of this version. Pear, fig and apple are three, three and five letters, few enough that a child who has been forming single letters can hold the entire word in mind from the first stroke to the last. Because the solid model sits directly above the dashed copy, the eye has something correct to check against at every moment, and the empty line arrives while that model is still in view rather than pages later.

Print the PDF free and hand out a sharpened pencil rather than a marker, so the dashed guides stay visible under the strokes. This is the gentlest of the tracing pages: the vehicles version asks for two independent writes after a single trace, and the toys version moves up to words of eight and nine letters. When these three fruit words are steady, the singular and plural page adds an ending to words the child can already write.
