Circle the Right Word: Eight Vehicle Cards, A or An

Kindergarten Language Aligned standard — coming soon

Eight vehicles, two chips under each. This Kindergarten a or an page runs four rows of two smaller cards - a ship, a skateboard, an ambulance, a bicycle, a canoe, a jeep, a yacht, a taxi - and under every picture sit the same two white chips, a and an. The child says the vehicle name, hears whether it starts with a vowel sound, and circles the chip that goes in front of it. Nothing is written and nothing is printed to read.

Eight cards is long enough to show a pattern rather than a handful of separate answers. Most vehicles here take a, so the ambulance stands out, and that is the page working as intended: the child has to keep listening rather than settling into a rhythm. Vehicles are also a harder set than animals for this rule, because the vowel-sound names are rarer - which means the child who gets ambulance right has genuinely heard it rather than guessed from the picture.

Print the PDF free and go through it aloud in two halves, four cards then four, rather than in one silent run. If a child circles without speaking, cover the chips and ask for the name first. The four picture version uses larger animal cards and fewer decisions for a first attempt at the rule. Once a and an are secure in speech, the singular and plural page works on the other end of the same noun, and the write the word page asks for the vehicle names in writing.
