Read and Color: A Busy Page with Six Colors

Six cards, six colors and a crowd on every strip. This 1st grade read and color page uses black and white toys and objects - tractors, ufos, helicopters, drums, buckets, cacti - and each card asks for a count of three, four or five of one kind while two or three others sit alongside them. Orange, purple, blue, red, yellow and brown run across the key at the top, which is twice as many color words as the shorter version carries.

Crowding the strip is what makes this the harder page. When four of the eight pictures are tractors and the rest are not, the child cannot color by shape at a glance; the noun has to be read, the pictures matched to it, then counted to the number the sentence gives. Higher counts add a second demand, because five means checking rather than seeing. A teacher scanning the finished page reads the errors directly: a purple ufo too many is a counting slip, a purple tractor is a reading one.

Print the PDF free and let the child work down one column at a time; six cards at this density is a full session rather than a warm-up. Keep the color key in view throughout.
