Read and Color: Four Sentences, Four Colors

Four sentences, four colors, and one extra animal on every strip. This 1st grade read and color page gives each card a single instruction - Tom colors 2 giraffes blue, Color 3 parrots red - above a small group of black and white line-art animals. Two giraffes and a meerkat. Three parrots and a lion. The color key sits in a dashed strip at the top with a swatch beside each of the four color words, and nothing else is printed.

Reading here has a consequence that shows. To color anything the child has to decode the animal name, the number word and the color word, and hold all three at once, and the spare animal on every strip means a child who colors whatever is there will get it wrong. Four cards and four colors keep that load fair for a reader who is still sounding words out. A colored meerkat says more about the reading than any tick would.

Print the PDF free on plain paper so crayons and markers both work, and leave the key uncovered - looking up green is reading, not cheating. Four is the shorter of the two read and color pages: the busy version uses six sentences, six colors, counts up to five and more than one distractor per strip.
