Number of the Day up to 99: Two-Digit Numbers, Four Equations

Seventy-nine fills the card at the top left of this 1st grade number of the day page, and it is the two-digit end of the range that makes this version the hardest of the three. Four equations are stacked in one box - 79 + 10, 79 - 10, 79 + 1, 79 - 1 - beside the tens and ones split and a dot grid for base ten blocks. The number line below runs 0 to 100 with a label every ten, and the last box counts on by tens rather than by ones.

Putting one more and one less next to ten more and ten less is the whole argument of the page. The two pairs look alike and behave completely differently: one changes the digit on the right, ten changes the digit on the left, and a number ending in nine makes both of them interesting, because 79 + 1 crosses into eighty and 79 + 10 does not. Counting on by tens from 79 in the final box asks the child to do it again three times over.

Numbers ending in 8 or 9 are the ones worth choosing when you set the day's number.
