Beginning Sounds Worksheet
Beginning Sounds with Fruits — Letter B
Which fruit begin with B? On this Kindergarten worksheet the child says each picture and keeps the ones that start with B's sound — blackberry, banana and blueberry. Sounding out the start of blackberry and deciding whether it matches the letter B is letter-sound work, the bedrock of reading. The scene is full of an apple, a banana and a pear, so there are plenty of first sounds to compare against B.
Producing the match — deciding that blackberry begins with B — asks a child to do real phonics: hold the sound B makes in mind and test each picture's opening against it. Because the fruit include names that begin other ways, the child cannot guess; they have to listen. That careful sound-by-sound checking against the letter B is precisely what Kindergarten reading is built on.
Listening for B across a scene of fruit turns phonics into a game, and finishing one letter invites the next. Try the A-sound pictures in fruits, or the C-sound pictures in fruits. Browse all the beginning-sounds worksheets or the entire fruit set, free to print or play online for kindergarten, and watch how quickly a child starts catching the first sound in a word on their own. One last pass: name each fruit picture in turn, catch its opening sound, and keep only the ones that start the way B does.
