Word Problem Practice: Three Stories on One Page

Grade 1 Operations & Algebraic Thinking Common Core

Three stories fit on this Grade 1 page instead of the usual two, each trimmed a little to keep everything readable — a short story, a picture strip, a smaller work space, an answer box. The mix adds and subtracts, so every story opens with a decision before any counting starts. It is the same task the other word problem pages set, packed slightly tighter and asked one more time.

Three problems in a row is a small test of endurance, and endurance matters more in word problems than in any other kind of arithmetic. A child who solves the first story carefully, the second hastily and the third by guessing is telling you something useful, and it is not that they cannot subtract. Because the layout is compact and the instructions never change, this page also runs well as homework or as an early-finisher sheet — nobody needs it explained twice, and it can be marked in under a minute.
