Six Dutch words you would need inside a post office

Posting something is one of the few adult errands a small child genuinely enjoys, and these are the words for it: BRIEF, ENVELOP, PAKKET, STEMPEL, BEZORGING and BRIEVENBUS. All six lie hidden in the letter grid, with a picture beside each, so the sheet works even before any of the Dutch has been formally taught. A child matches the drawing of the parcel to PAKKET, then sets off hunting.

BRIEVENBUS repays a second look, because BRIEF is living inside it. One letter is a BRIEF; several are brieven; a bus is a box — so the letterbox is a brieven-bus. Spotting the shorter word inside the longer one is a genuine reading skill, and this grid hands a child two words for the price of one. STEMPEL, the stamp you thump down on the counter, needs no explaining at all, and ENVELOP gives itself away on sight.

Pair it with actually posting something. Write a card, walk to the postbox, and the words stop being letters in a grid. BEZORGING, delivery, is the abstract one and tends to be circled last, partly because nine letters take some tracking and partly because there is nothing concrete to hold on to. If it stalls, cover the grid, read the word aloud twice, then let the hunt begin again.
